Particulate matter (PM) comprises particles of less than 2,5 micrometers and can be carried deep into the lungs where it can cause inflammation and worsen the condition of people with heart and lung diseases. The major human source is combustion, and to a lesser extent abrasion. Natural sources include dust, sand and smoke from forest fires. The main source of particulates in urban areas is from diesel-engined road vehicles, although industrial, public, commercial and residential combustion also contributes. The annual limit target that was due to be met by 1 January 2015 was set to 25 µg per cubic meter by the EU which was adjusted to 20 µg per cubic metre in 2020.
